The first untethered space walks were performed by astronauts McCandless and Stewart. First in-space use of the Manned Maneuvering Unit. West German-built Shuttle Pallet Satellite (SPAS), originally flown on STS 7, became the first satellite to be reburbished and flown again. Two satellites were successfully deployed, but failure of the satellite rocket motors left them in radical Earth orbits. Challenger landed February 11, at 8:47 AM, EST at the Kennedy Space Center, FL. The flight marked the first time the spacecraft landed at its launch site. Mission duration was seven days, 23 hours, 17 minutes. Challenger traveled 2.8 million miles in 127 orbits.
