First space flight of non-astronaut scientists and first foreigner (Merbold) representing the European Space Agency (ESA) to fly on the Shuttle. First Spacelab mission. The ESA and NASA jointly sponsored the Spacelab 1 flight and contributed investigations which demonstrated the capability for advanced research in space. Landed December 8, at 3:47 PM PST at Edwards Air Force Base, CA. Mission duration 10 days, seven hours and 47 minutes. Traveled 4.3 million miles in 167 orbits.
